Getting Connected

To get connected with Optus Thuraya Satellite Service, you will need a Thuraya Dual Mode satellite phone, satellite SIM card and an eligible Personal Optus GSM Mobile plan with the Optus Thuraya Satellite Service.

Important Information

Minimum total cost for the Optus Thuraya Satellite Service over 12 or 24 months consists of the sum of: the monthly access fee of $50 for the Optus Thuraya Satellite service (which is on a month to month basis) plus the monthly access fee of your chosen Optus GSM Mobile plan plus the applicable monthly handset repayment charge, over 12 or 24 months (depending on the plan selected).

Optus Thuraya Satellite Service: 1. Satellite service is not guaranteed in any location even while in coverage area. 2. Satellite calls require clear line of sight to a Thuraya satellite. Obstructions such as buildings, heavy tree coverage, mountains, bridges, overpasses and garages may restrict the signal. 3. To use the Thuraya Satellite Service, you must have International Roaming activated. 4. Emergency Dialling cannot operate across in satellite mode without the relevant SIM card in the handset. 5. Optus Thuraya satellite handsets cannot dial Emergency Services while the keypad is locked. 6. Emergency Dialling may not operate everywhere overseas in satellite mode (as per international roaming) 7. Satellite calling requires Australian area code for local landline numbers, eg 02 for a NSW number. 8. Receiving SMS is not available in satellite mode from other Australian carriers, eg Telstra, 3, Vodafone. Receiving SMS is not guaranteed from other satellite or international operators. 9. Sending SMS to other satellite phone services such as Iridium or Inmarsat is not guaranteed. 10. Satellite to satellite calls cannot restrict Calling Line Identification. 11. GPRS and MMS are not available in satellite mode. 12. Mobile Internet Browsing, Video calling, 1900 services, Optus Zoo, MyZooNow, Premium SMS(PSMS), Restricted Access (RA) services, Push To Talk (PTT), Mobile IM, TrueLocal, 3G or dual band services are not available in satellite mode. 13. The Thuraya handset does not support Push To Talk (PTT), MMS, Optus Zoo, MyZooNow, Mobile Internet Browsing, Mobile IM, TrueLocal, Video Calling, Optus 3G or dual band services 14. Satellite calls and flagfalls are excluded from all promotions such as ‘yes’ time. 15. Optus Thuraya Satellite Service: is only available when taken with an eligible Optus Consumer GSM mobile rate plan. The monthly access fee for the Optus Thuraya Satellite Service is $50 per month plus the monthly access fee of the eligible GSM mobile rate plan you have chosen and any handset repayment charges. You will be charged for GSM usage at the standard rates of your nominated Personal Optus GSM Mobile plan. The Thuraya handset and Optus Thuraya Satellite Service does not support some features that may be available on the GSM service with other compatible handsets. Usage made or received in satellite mode will be charged at satellite rates which are in addition to the included value of your plan and monthly access fee charges. If you cancel or suspend access to the satellite component of your Optus Thuraya Satellite Service and want to continue using the Thuraya handset in GSM mode, you must choose either to disable international roaming or swap your Optus Satellite SIM for a GSM only SIM. No cancellation fees apply if you cancel or suspend the satellite component of the service, but a charge of $25 may apply for the SIM swap. If you disconnect before expiry of the contract, cancellation fees will apply on your GSM mobile rate plan plus amounts owing on your handset.
